This morning, I’m excited to share with you a new episode that showcases the musical tastes of William Ryan Fritch, a master of crafting immersive and evocative soundscapes that transport us to otherworldly realms. He’s curated a selection of tracks that take us on a journey through the realms of ambient, jazz, and experimental soundscapes.

From the hauntingly beautiful sounds of Mabe Fratti to the transportive instrumental records of Claire Deak, and from the transcendental jazz of Nala Sinephro to the ethereal ambient landscapes of William Ryan Fritch himself, this episode is a sonic exploration that will leave you feeling refreshed, inspired, and maybe even a little bit transformed.

Till there’s music, there’s hope. Let’s keep the light on.

William Ryan Fritch’s selection

Mabe Fratti - Enfrente

William Ryan Fritch: Mabe Fratti has been one of my very favorite artists over the last few years. Her music is constantly inspiring.

There is an angularity, absolute command of tire, texture and feel in everything and her musical compatriots produce. There is also a spirit of immediacy and effervescent ease with which these haunting and immersive songs are constructed that makes them all feel so sincere and inviting no matter how adventurous the palette she is painting with.I also loved her album Vidrio with her band Titanic and it was far an away my most listened to album last year.

Claire Deak - Quarrel of the senses

William Ryan Fritch: Claire and her partner Tony Dupe are two of my very favorite musicians on the planet and two human beings that I relate to musically as much as anyone I’ve ever met.

This album of Claire’s is amongst the most transportive and magical instrumental records Ive ever listened to. The depth of detail in love put into every crevice of these compositions is extraordinary. It triggers and conjures synesthetic reactions in me that Ive seldom experienced. There is a fragrance to this music and memorable pungency to every the most seemingly beautiful and consonant moments that speaks to how deceptively complex what she is doing really is.

Can’t recommend this highly enough.

Nala Sinephro - Continuum 1

William Ryan Fritch: Of all of the amazing new transcendental jazz artists out there Nala’s work speaks to me the most. Just remarkable command of her instruments, phrasing, and world building. She has incredible restraint and musicality that is undeniable.Fantastic album and I’m so excited to hear what music she creates next.

Curator’s selection

William Ryan Fritch - Gravitropic

ImaCrea: This track comes from Adhesion, the final album from a trilogy reflecting “on the many calamitous water crises affecting life on this planet”. Behind the veil of an ethereal ambient landscape, William Ryan Fritch’s music is well anchored to earth. His composition are extremely sensitive and bring light even to the darkest corner of the soul. I’m very glad I came across his music thanks to the second opus of this serie, Cohesion.

Listening to this track feels to me like going for a walk. It refreshes my mind and lets the spirit fly freely through the landscapes of my imagination.

LEYA - Corners

ImaCrea: It’s been a while since I last listened to LEYA. I remember I discovered them thanks to Sarah, who made an episode with them. What a beauty - go listen to it afterwards(!). Somehow, listening to William’s music reminded me of them, and what a great surprise to see they recently released a new album, I Forget Everything. I’m just discovering it, so it will take a few listening sessions to fully embrace it, but Corners has already hit me deep.

Marina Herlop - Babel

ImaCrea: I’m captivated by the way this track begins. Marina Herlop’s music has a unique quality that’s both refreshingly new and warmly familiar. She strikes a perfect balance, guiding us towards uncharted territories while keeping her audience firmly grounded. This delicate equilibrium is a hallmark of her artistry, and it’s what makes her music so compelling and rewarding to listen to.

Patricia Wolf - Nocturnal Migration

ImaCrea: Patricia Wolf is back with a new tape, The Secret Lives of Birds, a vast and enveloping soundscape where synth waves travel through the sky with birds.I love how she’s interrogating the possibilities of music and sound recording as a vessel to re-ignite our lost sensitivities to the living. I find that this track can be just as interesting as a closing or opening track, and it works very well when listening to the episode on repeat.. If you discover Patricia Wolf’s work, here’s the episode 514 where I was honored to have her as a guest.

That’s it for this morning. Thank you for listening and much love to William Ryan Fritch, for sharing these very soothing and inspiring tracks. And many thanks to Noémie for this illustration that brings light and warmth.
